Fremont Theatre Courses 

Theatre 1

Taught by Aubrey Obray

Do you think you might enjoy performing on stage? This is the class for you! Voice and diction skills, movement, pantomime, and acting are some of the subjects we explore. We make puppets, write our own plays, and perform scenes and monologues.  A wide range of experiences and opportunity to perform on stage will be available to each student.  If you’ve already taken theatre classes, no worries, this course will broaden your horizons even more. This is a ½ year course. (10th, 11th, or 12th).

Advanced Theatre

Taught by Ashley Patterson

This theatre course is designed for students who really enjoy the dramatic arts and wish to increase their knowledge and skills. In this class we will be studying improvisation, study and perform Shakespeare, learn advanced acting techniques and more. We rehearse and perform a children’s theatre touring show and a one-act for competition and Center Stage Showcase. Full year course (10th,11th or 12th) (Theatre I and II a preferred prerequisite).

Actors Repertory

Taught by Ashley Patterson

This class is taught by Mrs. Patterson and is the most advanced class that she teaches. The word "repertory" means a collection of works (plays, songs, operas, ballets) that an artist or company can perform and do perform for short intervals on a regular schedule. The goal of this class it to expose you to as many theatrical works and performing opportunities possible. We will touch on Improvisation, Classical Theatre, Contemporary Scenes, perform the Touring Children's Show, produce the Fremont Competition One-Act that competes at Region and State, and more. This class does NOT do any singing or dancing and is focused on Acting. This class is for those who want more out of their high school theatre experience and will require SOME rehearsals outside of class time. This class is encouraged to participate in the Fall Musical, UTA Dramacon and UHSAA Theatre Competition.  



Intro to Theatre Tech

If you’re interested in theatre but don’t want to be on stage or if you’ve ever been curious about what happens behind the scenes of a live theatrical production, then this class is for you. In this ½ year course, students will be introduced to all the elements of technical theatre. We will study scenic design, costume design, lighting design, and sound design. We will also learn basic scenic construction skills, scenic painting skills, prop making skills. Additionally, students will learn how to run all the stage equipment in Fremont’s auditorium including the lighting control console, sound mixing console, how to hang and focus lighting instruments, how to hang scenery from a counterweight (fly system), and more. If students are interested in working backstage for any of Fremont’s productions and assemblies, this class must be completed first. This is a ½ year course (10th, 11th, or 12th).

Stage Crew

Taught by Aubrey Obray 

After learning all the fundamentals in Intro to Technical Theatre, students have the opportunity to work on the Fremont stage. Students in this course design, construct, paint all the scenery for the theatre department’s mainstage productions (4 per year). Additionally, students may apply to stage manage productions as well as design lights, sound, and props for productions. Also, students will work as the backstage running crew for productions as well as operate all sound and lighting equipment for productions, assembly, and auditorium facility rentals. Students who are interested in pursuing technical theatre in college should take this course. After school commitment is expected.  Only 25 students will be allowed in each section of stage crew each year. Requires a teacher signature for acceptance into the course.

WSU Theatre 1013 - Intro Theatre

Taught by Aubrey Obray 

This course encourages the appreciation of theater as an art and should aid in understanding of how theater is created, how it is presented, and how it relates to its audience and society in past and modern cultures. Students also increase understanding about craft of theater and of the various skills and artists necessary for theater production.

Students will create theatre sketches and presentations that increase their understanding of the creative processes in art as demonstrated by the creative project and class assignments that explore different areas of theatre production. There will be 3 projects (elements of design, French neo classical play, and mashups).

Play Productions

Taught by Aubrey Obray  

Theatre IV is an advanced theatre class. Designed for those students who love the dramatic arts and are serious about improving their skills. In this course you will participate in advanced acting, script analysis, preparation and audition techniques, advanced scene work, directing, and more. In conjunction, students will have the opportunity to direct their own plays and perform in productions. This class is also the backbone of our competition team so they prepare pieces for region and state competitions. All those considering a career in theatre or hoping to receive a theatre scholarship should take this class. There are after-school requirements for this course. Full-year course (11th,12th grade)(Theatre III prerequisite and audition required).

Survey Cinema

Do you like movies? Do you wonder what it’s like to create movies? Then this is the place for you. Come take a look at movies from the earliest days of film to the latest craze and find out what makes this artform so fascinating. No prerequisite required. 

Musical Theatre Dance

Taught by Ashley Patterson

Musical Theatre Dance! Come learn the moves you need to be awesome on stage. In this class, we explore basic dance technique and explore musical theatre styles. We'll learn dances from various genres of musicals.   We'll perform a "Broadway Review" each semester!  No prerequisite required!

Can I take Performing Arts every year and still have enough credits to graduate?

Yes! You have plenty of room to take performing classes and still be able to complete your graduation requirements.

Does Performing Arts count towards my graduation requirements?

Yes! Performing Arts counts towards your art credit and elective credit. You need 1.5 art credits to graduate and 8.0 elective credits. Once you complete your 1.5 art credit the rest of your music classes will count towards your elective credit.

Can I take two Performing Arts Classes?

Yes! Keep in mind that this may cause for some creative schedule making. You might have to move around your schedule and push some of your required courses until your junior or senior year. Check the suggested course schedule to see how you can fit two performing arts classes in your schedule. If you have questions about fitting everything in, talk to your counselor. If it is important for you to fit Performing Arts into your schedule, the counselors will work with you to help make that happen. 

I need to take a foreign language class so I can meet the admission requirements for college. I'm worried that I don't have room for music and a foreign language. Can I take both?

Yes! There is room in your schedule to take both. However, you will need to do some careful planning to make both classes fit. Remember, foreign language will count towards your required elective credit but is not required for graduation. See the suggested course schedule to see how you can fit both of these classes into your schedule.
